Before El Jefe was El Jefe, or the Giant, or Public Enemy, he was just Ryan Wedding, a 27-year-old hulking former Olympian serving out the last bit of a sentence on a cocaine deal gone bad. In the decade and a half following his initial release from prison, Wedding would become one of the biggest drug traffickers in North America. When an indictment against Wedding was unsealed in October 2024, he became a figure of global fascination. Law enforcement sources said they thought it was a matter of time before he was captured – maybe a few weeks, at most six months. More than a year later, Wedding is still at large. Developments in the hunt for the alleged leader of an international trafficking network — including new murder charges — suggest his days on the run may be numbered.
